A good shower space makes mornings pleasant and energises you for the day. Creating one involves more than aesthetics—proper waterproofing, adequate ventilation, and appropriate materials ensure the space remains functional and pleasant for years rather than developing mould and damp problems within months.
Waterproofing
Water inevitably splashes beyond shower enclosures. Bathroom tiles and grout protect walls, but waterproofing behind tiles is crucial where water regularly contacts surfaces. Proper waterproofing membranes, applied correctly to walls and flooring in shower zones, prevent water penetrating to building structure where it causes serious damp problems. Many DIY bathroom installations fail because waterproofing is neglected—a false economy that creates expensive problems.
Silicone sealant in tile joints and gaps requires replacement periodically as it degrades. Check sealants annually and reseal any gaps. Proper maintenance prevents water ingress.
Ventilation
Shower steam must be extracted from bathrooms or it condenses, encouraging mould growth and damp. Extract fans should operate during and for 15 minutes after showers. Blocked vents don't work effectively; clean ductwork ensures proper operation. If your bathroom lacks an extract fan, installing one prevents mould and condensation problems. Windows alone don't ventilate adequately during or immediately after showering.
Shower Enclosures
Frameless glass enclosures look clean and modern but require meticulous maintenance to avoid soap scum and mineral deposits. Framed enclosures are easier to maintain but less visually spacious. Shower trays must drain efficiently; standing water indicates drainage problems requiring attention. Non-slip surfaces are essential—wet bathroom floors are slippery and injury risks.
Practical Design
Adequate lighting makes showers safe and pleasant. Recessed lighting handles moisture better than exposed fixtures. Grab bars or handles in tiled areas improve safety, particularly for older households or those with mobility considerations. Storage for toiletries should be integrated into enclosures or walls rather than cluttering the space.
Finishes and Maintenance
Select finishes that are genuinely waterproof and easy to clean. Textured tiles harbour mould; smooth tiles are easier to maintain. Grout colour affects appearance of any soap scum or mineral deposits; dark grout hides staining better than light grout.
A well-designed, properly maintained shower remains functional and pleasant for decades.
